SECRETARY: Dear All, We are looking for monthly donations for paying salaries, vaccinations and getting medicines to help injured stray animals. SOME NOTABLE FIELD CALLS: #PAWS rescued a tiny bird which had fallen off its nest. # An owl was rescued too from a gutter and is now recuperating at Thane SPCA animal hospital. The bird has a dislocated wing and will be shifted to a wildlife center once its better. # Although thankfully no snakes were found on the occasion of Nag panchmi this year,some snake charmers are found on Mondays. PAWS Best Volunteer Kunal Chheda did an excellent job of rescuing a cobra from the charmer. The reptile was fine and was released by Vishal Kantharia in forest area on 14th August. ........................... 3. DONKEY VACCINATION CAMP BY PAWS & THANE SPCA. In a camp organised by PAWS Treasurer & Trustee Anuradha Ramaswami for the donkeys in Kalwa area, all donkeys were vaccinated by Dr. Shweta Konkar of Thane SPCA. PAWS volunteers including Sonali, Nilesh, Monali, Vishal, Anuradha, Sherlyin attended the camp. One donkey who was sick & not able to walk was Hospitalized at Thane SPCA animal hospital despite heavy rains. Though the poor donkey did not survive we are grateful to have been able to help it and not allow it to die unattended. .............................. 5. TRANSLOCATION OF WILD ANIMALS & BIRDS TO PUNE'S WILDLIFE REHAB CENTER: 15th August 2006 marked Independance day of our four legged wild animals & birds too. PAWS team including Vishal, Anuradha, Sonali, Sherlyin, Manasi, Kishor, Nilesh & Prasad volunteered & accompanied the Wild Rhesus Monkeys, Barn Owl, Kites to Mr. Nilim Kumar Khaire's Wildlife Rescue and rehab center in Pune. All these animals & birds were rescued by PAWS & Thane SPCA. PAWS Mumbai also provided its ambulance to carry the animals to Pune. They also brought some more birds like budgerigars, Cocktails & Muniya's. We thank Dr. Shweta for running to wildlife dept. & doing follow-up work with them to obtain all necessary transit permits. ............................... 6. AWARENESS PROGRAM FOR SCHOOL BY PAWS VOLUNTEERS: Young team mates Lekha, Kunal & Sonali organized a PAWS presentation & PETA's 'Compassionate Citizen' shows for the School children of 'Saraswati Hi-school' on 1st & 2nd August. We thank Kunal for all his efforts and are also grateful to Shri. Chinawale - the Headmaster of school for all his help and support. ............................. 7. PAWS'S RECENT VISITORS: # PAWS Srecretary was invited by Ms. Linda Varghese & Ms. Ruhee S, of SIES College of Management studies, Nerul - New Bombay, to talk 'How to Market an NGO?' This went off welland fetched us some donation too! Mr. Nilesh Bhanage also gave a brief talk to Mr. Kunal Chaudhary,an MBA student on how he started PAWS and what are its current activities & future plans. The fundraising tactics, rescue operations, mission & vision of organizatios were also discussed. ........................... 8. ANTI-RABIES DRIVE IN GODREJ EDENWOODS COLONY - THANE: Like every year this year too the PAWS team including Kishore, Anahita, Sonali, Nilesh, Sherlyn & Anuradha organised the monthly Anti-Rabies drive in Eden woods colony in Thane city onSunday, the 20thAug .All the dogs, pups & cats were vaccinated for rabies with imported vaccines to immunize them for a year. .............................. 9. VEGAN RECEIPE: Recipe: Creamy Chocolate Cheesecake Feel better about indulging in a rich, decadent dessert with this cholesterol-free Chocolate Cheesecake. ItÂ's a treat for your mind and body. Rather than using heavy cream and cheese, this recipe contains soymilk and tofu, which are made from high-protein soybeans that contain all eight essential amino acids. Enjoy it knowing it's low in saturated fat, high in polyunsaturated fat, and absolutely delicious! Ingredients: 1 block of Silken Tofu (drained) 1 Graham Cracker Pie Crust 1 cup chocolate soymilk 1/3 cup cocoa powder 1/2 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips (optional) Directions: Cut block of tofu into small chunks and put into the blender. Add soymilk, sugar, vanilla extract, and cocoa powder and blend well until smooth. If you'd like, add chocolate chips. Once all are combined, pour into the pie crust and bake for 35-60 minutes in a preheated oven at 350º or until the top appears solid. Chill for 1-2 hrs before serving. APPEAL FOR FUNDS: Dear Supporters, On the auspicious occassion of Paryushan, we at PAWS appeal to the Jain community to kindly support our animal welfare cause with donations and funds. Animal welfare is possible only with the help of generous and large hearted animal loving people. We intend conducting several medical camps for donkeys and cattle, helping in stray dog treatments and sterilizations and conducting educational programs for creating awareness on animal rights.
