TMC plans to privatize water supply

Drawing inspiration from other civic bodies in the state, Thane Municipal
Corporation is also planning to privatise the distribution of water-supply.
TMC could well be the first civic body in the state to privatise
distribution, a key part of the water-supply chain. In a bid to arrest the
massive loss of water during distribution and the subsequent financial
losses suffered by the water-supply department, TMC is considering
privatisation of its water-supply distribution. "With two private companies
already expressing their readiness to takeover the Corporation's
water-supply distribution, the privatisation plans are likely to soon take a
concrete shape," disclosed a senior official attached to TMC's water supply
department. The idea to privatise Thane's water-supply department drew
inspiration from a similar plan made by the civic authorities of Andheri, in
Mumbai.

Ever since Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran had expressed its inability to
construct two channels for the flow of water to Thane city, TMC had taken
over that part of the water-supply project to ensure that the channels were
also constructed. Currently, Thane receives 350 mld of water, which is 50
mld lesser than the 400 mld needs of its population. Even out of this 350
mld, almost 20 percent of it's pilfered during distribution. Though the
figure is less than the water lost by the other civic bodies, TMC is aiming
to further reduce the losses, which will substantially improve the fiscal
health of the water-supply department. Moreover, with the additional water
expected in the future, the water needs of the entire population will be
completely met.

At a cost outlay of Rs. 125 crores, plans have been drawn for improvement of
the water distribution system within the city. If this plan is cleared by
the Government, the water woes of residents of areas like Mumbra and Wagle
Estate, who are currently experiencing severe shortage, will also be
alleviated. ¦
