24/7 water supply by 2015? Forget it THE CENTRAL government's ambitious plan to provide water supply 24x7 to Mumbaikars by 2015 under the National Water Policy may not materialise. The plan, announced last year, was to be implemented by the BMC, which now says it is not possible. At a group leaders' meeting held on Tuesday, additional municipal commissioner M.N. Srivastava said 24-hour water supply was not possible. "In the present state it is not possible as there is a huge gap between the demand and supply of water," said Srivastava, adding, "Of course, we will work towards this goal." Deputy Mayor Dilip Pa tel criticised the BMC on this count. "Before making these announcements, officials should have checked ground realities," said Patel. The BMC supplies to Mumbai 3,000 million litres of water daily (mld) though the requirement is 4,000 mld. However, former additional municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte who initiated this programme during his tenure argued that it is possible to provide Mumbai with 24 hours continuous water supply. "This project is possible once we involve private bodies. We had already called for tenders and had shortlisted consultants to initiate a pilot project at Andheri (W) during my tenure," said Kunte. http://70.86.150.98/Hindustantimes/artMailDisp.aspx?article=&_10_2005_005_00 3&typ==0&pub=&4 |
