World Bank to lend $4 bn for water plans

New Delhi: The World Bank on Wednesday announced its decision to step up by
five times its lending for water projects to 4 billion dollars in the next
four years.

    "The World Bank will increase water lendings to India from $200 million
a year to about one billion dollar a year for the next four years,'' World
Bank's senior water advisor for South Asia, John Briscoe, said while
releasing a draft on India'a water economy. Over the next four years, the
Bank will lend $1,400m for irrigation, $700m for rural water and sanitation,
$600m for hydro projects and $400m for managing water resources. TNN &
