That's how many trees your city is set to lose over the next few months

THE CIVIC Tree Authority on Wednesday sanctioned the cutting and transplanting of about 4,600 trees in the city.

About 2,506 trees will be cut and the rest transplanted -replanted at a nearby location - to make way for civic amenities and infrastructure projects.

A majority of the proposals were for government proj ects like building a pumping station and widening the Mithi river.

About 1,500 trees will be cut for a water pumping station at Bhandup. The Metro rail and other railway projects will also require the felling of 300 trees.

The Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Preservation of Trees Act (1975) states that if a tree is cut, two trees have to be planted as replacement.

"We will plant two trees for every tree we cut, so the tree population only increases," said Municipal Commissioner Jairaj Phatak, who also heads the Tree Authority. "There are numerous projects in the pipeline, especially in growing areas like Bhandup. These areas need amenities to sustain the growing population."

A recent tree census showed that there were about 32 lakh trees in the city. But environmentalists doubt the authenticity with which the Authority earmarks trees for cutting.

Two years ago, 300 trees were supposed to be felled at LBS Marg, but when residents objected and a survey was conducted, it was found that only a few trees really needed to be cut.

"The main problem is that the Tree Authority lacks inhouse technical expertise. Also there needs to be more transparency and technological evolution in the department. A website that details the activities of the Tree Authority must be put up," said Rishi Aggarwal, an environmentalist.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

1.  After the tree authority sanctions felling, notices are put up on trees inviting public suggestions.

2.  If you have an issue with trees being cut, you can contact the horticulture assistant in your ward.

3.  You can also call the Tree Authority head office at Rani Baug in Byculla on 23759821.
