Bandra to wake up to car-free Sunday

350 Bandraites have already promised to keep their cars off the roads on ‘Car Free Bandra Day’ on November 25

DANISH KHAN

Imagine waking up to a day with few cars on the road, to no carbon fumes, to nearempty roads. A Bandra resident is campaigning hard for this wish to be turned into reality and has managed to get November 25, a Sunday, declared a car-free day in Bandra.
Anusha Yadav already has 350 people pledging their support to the idea and the ‘Car Free Bandra Day’ is now a part of the ongoing ‘Celebrate Bandra’ festival.
Yadav, a freelance graphic designer, says, “It all started one lazy afternoon on October 23 when I put up the concept of a ‘Car Free Bandra’ on my Facebook account. To my surprise the number of people supporting the concept increased with each passing day.”
Immensely encouraged by the response, Yadav has now made posters which she will put up at select locations to make people aware of the campaign. “The least we can do is to let people know about the concept. I am sure many residents would be more than happy to support this campaign,” Yadav said.
She now plans to take the ‘Car Free Bandra’ campaign even further by proposing the last Sunday of every other month for it.
“The public transport in the city is not that bad. The idea is to get people to use it to travel within Bandra instead of in their private vehicles. Many households in Bandra own more than one car, adding to the congestion,” Yadav said.
Neale Murray, festival director, Celebrate Bandra, said, “We hope more and more people become part of the ‘Car Free Bandra’ campaign. The ‘Celebrate Bandra’ festival committee members have pledged not to use cars while travelling within Bandra. It is a novel concept and will help reduce pollution.”
Now Yadav and supporters of the campaign are eagerly looking forward to breathing a little easier on November 25. “I hope the difference is for all to see and feel and replicate after two months,” Yadav said.
