MBMC to sterilise 3,000 strays this yr ........Sandhya Nair

Mumbai: In a bid to curb the growing number of stray dogs in the region, the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has decided to revive its sterilisation programme, which had been held up due to paucity of funds.

The MBMC, which has its sterilisation centre at Uttan in Bhayander (W), plans to sterilise around 3,000 strays this year. While most of the strays in Bhayander have already been sterilised, the focus, say civic officials, is now on the strays in Mira Road.

According to the data available with the MBMC, 5,131 strays were sterilised in 2007-08. However, the civic administration, which had to shell out Rs 950 on sterilising each stray, had to halt the sterilisation drive in the last quarter of 2008 owing to scarcity of funds.

With the Animal Welfare Board offering to pay Rs 450 per dog, the MBMC is set to embark on its drive again.
