To address the problem of construction and debris waste, the Environment Protection Society of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has taken up a Construction and Debris Waste Processing and Recycling Project for the region.
First of its kind in the country, the project envisages to recycle and reuse construction and debris generated in the metropolitan region. "This will not only solve the problem of dumping, the environmental pressures would also be solved," said Dr Vikas Tondwalkar, director of Mithi River Protection and Development Authority.
Technical and environmental feasibility of the project is underway. "We will study worldwide practices and implement the best model," said Tondwalkar.
"Since it is the first time in India that such a project is being undertaken, we wanted to verify all the aspects before implementation," additional metropolitan commissioner Milind Mhaiskar said.
At present, a detailed study about source, quantum and current methods of disposal of construction and debris waste is underway.
"We are also looking at ways to minimise construction and debris waste in the region with the help of available technologies and comparing the region with case studies available in other parts of the world," Tondwalkar said.
The major thrust would be on diverting construction and debris waste away from landfill sites. "After completing basic research and ground work for the project, Techno-Economic Feasibility Study will be undertaken which will be completed in nine months," Tondwalkar said.
