Mumbai: The BMC has found a unique solution to control the foul odour emanating from its four major dumping sites in the city. It will buy 42,000 litres of herbal air-freshener that will not only reduce the stench but also leave a long-lasting flowery scent in the vicinity.
Thousands of residents living around these sites have been complaining about health problems caused by thousands of tonnes of waste dumped at these sites. The product will be the first be used in two of the biggest dumping grounds of Deonar and Mulund, both handling over 7,000 metric tonnes of garbage every day, said officials.It will cost Rs 60.9 lakh and the quantity is enough to be used over a period of 180 days.
“The fresheners are made of herbal chemicals and will have not harm our staff working on the site. Over the years, residents living in the vicinity have also complained about health problems caused by the waste, but hopefully this product will provide them with some respite,’’said A Karim,chief engineer, Solid Waste Management. The BMC has for long been grappling with the problem of accommodating the rising amounts of waste generated in the city. It has limited land to make way for dumping grounds and recently shut down it biggest dumping ground on a 25-hectare plot in Gorai.
