 Sept.21, 05 : PIL - Access for All

Dear Friend,

It is to inform you that a Public Interest Litigation titled “Javed Abidi vs UOI & Ors” involving questions regarding availability of facilities for the persons with disabilities at various public places, public buildings and railway stations throughout the country as per provisions of the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995 is pending before Delhi High Court since 2001.  In this matter, Government of India, ASI, DDA, MCD, NDMC, Ministry of Railway, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Surface Transport and DTC are respondents parties.

The High court on the last date of hearing i.e. 24.8.2005 appointed me as Amicus Curiae to assist the Hon’ble Court in this matter.  The next date of hearing is 28.9.2005.

I see it as an opportunity to highlight the shortcomings on the part of the Government and its agencies to provide barrier free environment for the persons with disabilities and through Court’s intervention get them rectified.  However, I will be able to do better, if you assist me with requisite information and suggestions.

Kindly do needful in the matter at the earliest.

I can be contacted at 483, Lawyers Chambers, Block – II, Delhi High Court, Shershah Road, New Delhi 110003 (E-mail:socialjurist@socialjurist.com)

With regards

Ashok Agarwal
