Session on RTI to Educate Slum Dwellers

HC representatives, students of Gopaldas J Advani Law College organised the
event An interactive session on the Right to Information (RTI) Act held at
Meghwadi police Station, Andheri (East), on Saturday for slum dwellers and
members of the Mohalla Committee of Radhabai Chawl. The session-organised by
the High Court Legal Service Committee and students of Gopaldas J Advani Law
College-aimed at educating slum dwellers about the RTI Act. Bombay High
Court Justice S Radhakrishnan, Additional Commissioner of Police Bipin
Bihari and other senior police officers were also present during the
session. Justice S Radhakrishnan during his speech said, "The importance of
the law (RTI) is to give public the entitlement to avail information.

" He added, "Such programmes aim at making people aware of the laws and
simplifying things for the common man." Bipin Bihari said, "Such programmes
will help students become responsible citizens and will also help them
understand people better in future." The students explained the procedure of
obtaining information through the RTI Act to the slum dwellers.

Following the discussion, the slum dwellers clarified their doubts and raised a few
questions, which were answered by Bihari. Kaushal Sharma, a student, said,
"It is a very different experience for us. Such programmes give us practical
exposure." They also distributed RTI forms and basic information leaflets on
RTI to the audience. The students are also planning to hold more sessions to
educate slum dwellers on different laws and rights every Saturday till March
31.
