CII Skills Initiative

Making India the Skills Capital of the World

Dedicated Website on CII Skills Initiative launched

Background

Of late, much has been talked about the need for developing skills of the Indian populace. The swelling population, which was once viewed as an economic burden for the country, is now the biggest opportunity we have. Projections indicate that we are heading for towards  a demographic advantage, as it is termed, because it would be then that the developed world shall look up to us for what they need the most - productive & skilled workers.

While the good news here is that the realization about the need for reaping the demographic dividend is gaining importance & attention, India still has many a challenges to counter. Despite the numbers we are short on quality & skills. In this era of specializations, be it the 'rust collar worker'  or the white collar manager, all need to be trained on globally benchmarked skills and deliver quality.

Probing further the linkages can be better understood by analyzing the employment scenario in the country. The high school drop out rates, 90% of workforce in the unorganized sector, limited training opportunities, a large semi-skilled & unskilled labour force, low dignity of labour & exploitation at work are the fuel in the fire. These are hinderers in India becoming the global manpower destination.

To address the challenges & opportunities, which are far more and complex than the ones highlighted above, CII initiated the Skills Development Initiative in 2004. Started as a pilot project to make the industry aware of the importance & encouraging its participation in skilling the people, the initiative has already had a ripple effect. While, today the entire country is talking of skilling the youth for a better and sustainable future, the initiative is slowly spreading its wings internationally. Stakeholders across the length & breadth of the country are ready to join hands and fast becoming part of what is now a revolution in making. A movement which shall stir the entire nation and witness the power of public private partnership towards building an inclusive society - a society full of skilled people. A movement which shall make the CII dream come true - the dream to "Make India the Skills Capital of the World"

To facilitate understanding about the CII Skills Initiative has launched its website. The website shall provide details about the CII skills projects initially and in the coming days shall become a one stop IT platform for all the Skilling needs. It shall provide to all stakeholders services that shall help them promote the cause of skills.
