CR reserves entire coach for disabled
Mumbai: Polio-inflicted Sanjay Tiwari sat comfortably on his berth. He looked out of the Nashik-bound train as he waited for his journey to start from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.
Tiwari was seated in a compartment reserved for the physically-challenged. “It feels great to have the whole coach reserved for us. I won’t have to travel in packed trains,’’ said the 28-year-old who is accompanied by his father J P Tiwari. “It comes as a huge relief that Central Railway (CR) has decided to reserve one coach for us.’’ His father, however, fears that this facility will be misused by the general public.
Tiwari, however, was travelling on a coach reserved for the physically- challenged which is part of CR’s trial run. From Independence Day, 31 mail and express trains will start regular services. Two 2-tiers, non AC berths will be reserved for those who are orthopaedically challenged, paraplegic, deaf and dumb or blind.
“This provision comes as a great boon for the physically challenged. Each of the 31 trains will include four spacious sleeping berths for handicapped patients with attached toilet facilities,’’ said chief PRO S C Mudgerikar.
