THE GOVERNMENT is funding universities across the country to renovate their infrastructure in a disabled-friendly manner. Buildings will have disabled-friendly toilets, sloped ramps and lifts with audio systems announcing floor numbers and buttons with writing in Braille. They will also have disabled-friendly computer rooms.
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has con tacted many state universities and has already released about Rs 47 lakh to the University of Rajasthan. University officials said the funds have been received and details of the plans are being worked out. "The locational preference of university buildings to be chosen for renovation is being worked out," an official said. The university will provide books in Braille and is also plan- ning counselling for dis- abled students.
"Our initial aim is to have at least one disabled- friendly university in each state. We have con tacted a number of universities like Gauhati, Goa and Pune. The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology in Bhubaneswar, which recently became a deemed university, is also undergoing a makeover to become disabled-friendly . We received a proposal from Lucknow University also," a ministry official told HT.
Central universities that are part of the initiative include JNU, Jamia Millia Islamia and Delhi University . "In the hostels, we would like at least one room in each hostel to be designed for people with disabilities," the official said.
