Status

A national-level law firm and researcf centre set up to become a viable public interes law firm which operates in the areas of human rights, social justice and governance.

Focus

To provide a voice on issues of public controversy and as a back up centre in public interest litigation. To serve as a watchdog in areas of consumer, education, employment, numan rights, intellectual property, law, minorities, population, rural development, tribal and women's issues.

Programmes

Runs a separate specialist Refugee Law unit within the Human Rights division with the financial aid and support of UNHCR to help refugees in India with their deportation, naturalisation papers and criminal cases.
Human Rights and Social Justice unit concerns itself with all issues related to civil and political rights, economic and social rights as well as human right issues related to good governance. Involved with documentation, policy-based research and public advocacy support, opinion and advice, back up litigation support at New Delhi; through regional centres in the states, provides assistance and coordinates with various activist groups; devises training programmes and conducts seminars and workshops. Plays a key role in addressing issues on environmental degradation. For example earlier ampaign on the Rathong Chu came to fruition vhen the Chief Minister of Sikkim withdrew the reposal for a hydro power plant in the Yuksom 'alley. The Tehri Dam proposal is still being xamined for its safety, feasibility and 'habilitation. Also intervened in the Nagarhole ational Park case and the Tata group has en restrained from using the Park area to lid a hotel. Has been involved in the forest ies to conserve India's green heritage, the istal cases, the Sanghi projects in Gujarat uding the case on Narayan Sarovar Sanctuary.
Advises the Centre for Science and Environment on environment matters including scope and empowerment of the Delhi pollution Committee in dealing with the lion effects of diesel, the green rating project and trading emissions. People Clinic renders free legal aid and s to the needy and the disadvantaged. Has set up a separate wing to deal with cases related to women's issues such as dowry, sexual harassment at the workplace, electoral representation of women, reservation of women in the Parliament and at the panchayat level etc. Has provided extensive litigation support and provided legal advice in several cases relating to sick industries, consumer protection and labour problems.

Publications

Has a comprehensive publications programme to disseminate working papers on human rights, governance, woman and child-related issues, minority and backward communities, intellectual property rights, environment, free speech and media.
