A local secular agency that commenced activities in 1981. A member of National Leprosy Organisation. Registrations: Society; Trust; FCRA; 35AC; 80G; 12A. 

Focus

Preventive and curative health services, with emphasis on leprosy control, AIDS and TB. 

Geographical reach

N, S and T wards of Greater Mumbai area and the sub-metropolis of New Mumbai.

Programmes

Surveillance and follow-up network for 22 lakh leprosy, TB-/AIDS-afflicted people in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai's wards, villages and towns; undertakes research in leprosy and related health issues. Woman volunteers care for slum dwellers in North-East Mumbai with special emphasis on women and children; multi-drug therapy is provided through 29 treatment centres (1,000 new patients/ year). Support systems include two laboratories and physiotherapy units at Vikhroli and Vashi; examines skin smears and corrects disabilities and deformities; provides footwear/ splint units at Vashi where patients pay token amounts.
Community Health Education and Training Unit works with 550 community health volunteers; strives to eradicate leprosy; efforts of 20 years has reduced cases from 15 to 4 per 1,000 in the target 21 lakh population Plans To expand community resource mobilisation, conduct health research and expand TB control programme; AIDS education.

includes NG Joshi, Founder • Chairperson; Dr NGA D'Souza, Hon Chairperson; George Thomas, Hon Secretary. Staff 89 paid workers (part- and full-time); 10 volunteers.

Donors

include Tata Education Trust and Inter Aid. Public education linked to fundraising is an important initiative over the past five years, which makes appeals to schools, trusts and the corporate sector.
