Began in 1991 with the idea that children needed direction to contribute as responsible citizens. Established as an NGO in 1999; formerly a field-action project of Tata Institute of Social Science; networks with YUVA, Aga Khan Foundation and Asian Human Rights Commission. Programmes |
Pairs children from different backgrounds (municipal and private schools) to interact with differently-abled children; Aflatoon programme focuses on child's rights and responsibility; leadership camps impart skills; sensitises children to violation of rights of marginalised groups in society like street children; community-based programmes help form clubs; conducts week-end and holiday camps; Meljol Rural, initiated in September 1997, reaches out to rural and tribal children in Thane city; raises funds by levying service fees to conduct private school and community-based programmes; trains students from Tata Institute of Social Science; collaborates with other NGOs as a resource agency on child's rights to education; trains teachers in zilla parishad schools in Thane district and resource people to conduct workshops; conducts teachers-training workshops on MelJol text-books and volunteers' workshop to monitor schools.
