Abstract
|
In 1994, AAMRAE
adopted the Sangmeshwar Taluka for starting Rural Development Project due
to migration. The population consisted of women, adolescent, and children
below the age of 15. It was strategic, therefore to concentrate on the
residence. AAMRAE turned its attention to pre-school education. This
provided a structure for involving mothers in areas such as education,
family health and nutrition. AAMRAE established pre-schools centres for
children 2-3 years of age in 16 villages. Two women from each village were
chosen to be pre-school teachers. A team of experts from Mumbai conducted
an intensive 2 weeks training programme for the Balwadi teachers and
utilised locally available spaces such as temples and panchayats offices
to implement a lively education curriculum focusing on learning skills,
singing, drawing, painting, role play and dancing. Teachers and parents
also worked together to insure a healthy childhood for the children.
Nutritious meal was provided. Children were inoculated and received
medical check-up and one woman in each of the 25 villages were trained as
community health workers. Mahila Mandal was established in all the
villages and an educational programme was formed on functional literacy,
family planning, prenatal and postnatal care, child development and
sanitation. AAMRAE
