NGO reaches out to cancer patients..........DNA Correspondent
From organising free cancer detection camps to counselling cancer patients and offering them rent-free accommodation and return railway fare, Mumbai-based NGO Cancer Aid and Research Foundation (CARF) has been doing it all for seven years now. CARF between April 2001 and March 2008 has disbursed over Rs5.44 crore to more than 2,000 patients in need of help.
Recently, on its seventh foundation day, the NGO held a ceremony at Sri Shanmukhananda Hall, Sion, where it distributed cheques of Rs9.70 lakh to several needy cancer patients for treatment in various hospitals in Mumbai. CARF also felicitated 25 donors who had donated more than Rs1 lakh. Over 500 cancer patients from all over the country were attended the function.
“Our initial aim was to provide free standard health care to the needy,” said AA Kazi, former dean of the faculty of Arts, Mumbai University and chairman and founder of CARF. “We would like to bridge the gap between government and private sectors working for cancer cure.”
