THE Young Environmentalists Programme organised an event in the Forest Club at Powai on the occasion of the World Earth Day on Tuesday, at which its president Elsie Gabriel spoke about mobilising the environment movement by using the youth as a vehicle.
"We at Young Environmentalists Programme believe that Earth Day is an important reminder each year for us to connect, interact and have an impact on our own communities at a local level," said Gabriel.
Chief guest Anand Jagtap, Officer on Special Duty for Mumbai sewage disposal project, said that the society and the administration should join hands and form a network to seek a solution to environmental problems.
He extended his support to reports and projects on sewage disposal that are part of students' school and college assignments.
Hitesh Lachhwani from Asian Paints said they have live models on expounding rain water in their Bhandup office using which he would like the society to learn about the various methods of harvesting rain.
The organisation had been distributing hand-made cloth bags among vegetable and grocery vendors to raise awareness about the ban of plastic bags.
"However, this activity has been only partially successful," admitted Gabriel. The shop vendors promptly pointed out that it is the customers who demand plastic bags and not them.
