Boardroom's eco-warriors
Meet the corporates who not only concentrate on the bottomline, but also monitor their 'green meter'.........Marina Correa

There are corporates, and then there are socially-conscious corporates. Like the Godrej group, that has many green initiatives. For example, The Soonabai
Pirojsha Godrej Foundation has been maintaining the single largest mangrove tract near the Thane Creek adjoining the Godrej & Boyce Township since 1985.

They have also signed the CII Code for Ecologically sustainable business growth which commits them to saving natural resources and protecting the environment.

Says Adi Godrej, chairman, Godrej Group, "There are two green initiatives which are close to my heart. The CII-Godrej Green Business Centre in Hyderabad because it can transform the Indian industry into an environment-friendly mode. The other initiative is the conservation of the large tract of mangroves which I look upon as the lungs of Mumbai."

The Marriott group has 'adopted' the month of April as their eco-friendly month with green initiatives for their in-house staff and clients. The activities spanned a wide spectrum – from an environment quiz to waste management and a free PUC check to planting saplings and cleaning up Juhu beach. "The idea behind this is to promote awareness and show our commitment towards the environment," says Sunil Relia, cluster director of engineering, Marriott India. They take garbage disposal seriously. The waste from the hotel is segregated into dry and wet garbage. Garden waste is subjected to vermi-compost and used as manure. Even waste cooking oil from the kitchens are collected separately and sent to a bio-diesel manufacturing unit.

Renaissance Mumbai Hotel and Convention Centre recently adopted Nitie Village near Powai, where they undertook a clean-up drive besides the regular waste disposal system, planting of trees and energy conservation measure.

Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd's green initiatives include a rain water harvesting project at the Delhi Public School, Ahmedabad, a pond desilting project at Khurda in Orissa and a drinking water RO system at Goblej Village, Ahmedabad. Besides conducting a tree plantation drive at all its plants, partenering with the

Maharashtra Pollution Control Board at Nasik to a organise a cycle rally to spread awareness on environment.

Says Atul Singh, president and CEO, Coca-Cola India, "Going forward, we will continue to build partnerships and collaborate with stakeholders to make a positive difference to the overall health of our planet."
