City students get tips on how to save power
Tata Power arranges presentations for more than 25 schools in city
Mumbai does not experience any load-shedding even as its less fortunate peripheral towns and cities face up to five hours a day. But it was the city school students who are being given lessons in energy conservation.
The Tata Power Company is reaching out to more than 25 schools in the city, imparting tips like using CFC bulbs, taking the staircase and switching off the lights when not required.
The initiative kick-started in Mumbai in August at prominent schools such as Bombay Scottish, Powai, Beacon high School, Khar, Vibgyor High, Goregaon. The session held at Learners’ Academy, Bandra on Wednesday saw students of classes VI and VII compete with each other on power-saving tips.
“Most students have a lot of theoretical knowledge but do not use it in real life. This way, I know at least 50% students will suggest their parents to use lower watt power or skip the elevator and climb down the stairs,” said Manisha Mishra, programme convener, Tata Power.
The company will also start a competition among students to become ‘energy club champion’. The ones reducing energy consumption at home and school will get the title. “I have always read about lack of power in Mumbai but did not know that using screen saver or opening the refrigerator frequently increases power consumption,” said Yash Belani, a class VII student of Learners’ Academy. The 12-year-old is now persuading his friends to take up energy-saving measures.
“A conscientious student can influence parents’ behaviour. Getting the message across to students ensures that the whole family participates in the campaign,” said KS Jamali, principal of Beacon High School, Khar.
Schools will also be involved in an innovative competition. “We will compare the electricity bills of schools from October to February. The school that has successfully reduced its bills to a maximum extent, will be declared winner in 2009,” said Mishra.
Company MD Prasad Menon said, “The programme is not a one-time activity; as it intends to reinforce the spirit of wastage elimination, efficiency improvement and cost reduction. A key goal is to teach the youth to ensure power conservation through wastage reduction and efficiency improvements.”
