March 2007: Newsletter of Yuvak Pratishthan
Dear Friends, “Litter Free Mumbai” – the concept developed by Yuvak Pratishthan, is now in progress. The initiatives taken for In 1st Phase, 25 numbers of the Rag pickers registered with the organisation under ‘Yuvak Pratishthan’s Samarpan Arogya Kendra’. The first camp is going to be organised in the first week of March. Highlights of the regular activities: Jeevan Aasha: In the month of February, 67 patients have visited our office and registered under Jeevan Aasha. 41 patients have received financial assistance this month from different Trusts. Others are under process. The following chart is showing the category of the patients / cases: Cancer - 05 Heart - 19 Kidney - 08 Brain - 03 TB - 03 General - 22 Enquiry - 07 Apart from this, we have received more than 1200 phone calls for enquiry / assistance during the month. 1 Patient screened for CT-Scan & 2 MRI cases forwarded to private institutions to be done at very concessional rates i.e. upto 60% & 50% discount respectively in their charges. We are receiving regular appreciation and gratitude from the patients. We once again would like to draw your attention towards a case of Mr. Manish Mirajkar, who is a resident of A-17/403, Veena Nagar, LBS Marg, Mulund West, Mumbai 400 080. He is suffering from ‘Blood Cancer’ since past 5 years. He has been jobless on account of his illness and his wife Mrs. Chayya have been supporting the family by doing home based tailoring work by earnings Rs.2,500/- per month. He has two school going children. Mr. Manish has been diagnosed as suffering from Chronic Myeloid Leukemia and has been advised surgery by the We are helping the patient by way of approaching individuals, different trusts for financial assistance to perform such treatment. We would like to mention here that Rs.2 Lakhs have been arranged from different sources till date. We would like to make an appeal to please help in whatever way possible to save Mr. Manish’s life. Please come forward and support the family. We request the individuals, organizations, institutions, and all who willing to help / support such patients can help by sending cheques in favour of “Tata Memorial Hospital” with a covering letter mentioning that the payment is being made for the treatment of Manish Suresh Mirajkar and send it to Yuvak Pratishthan, 9C, Neelam Nagar, Mulund East, Mumbai 400 081. For further information one can contact our office by phone, fax or email. Slum Sanitation Meetings with newly elected Municipal Councilor held this month. They are informed about the sanitation scheme. Also a meeting regarding the place held with the Shrikrishna & Sriram Mitra Mandals at Vikhroli Parksite area. Surveillance visits made to Satkar, Sankalp and Sairam Mitra Mandals to observe the actual demand of toilet blocks in the locality. Works are in progress at 7 places at Parksite, Vikhroli which includes Sankalp, Sriram, Gurukrupa, Varshanagar, Satkar, Om Sairam and Shivtirtha Mitra Mandals and 4 places at Tembhipada, Bhandup which includes Navnath, Ramnagar, Jay Ambe and Chhatrapati Shivaji Mitra Mandals. We are receiving good responses from the locality. We will be happy to help some more localities to provide with the same facility. We are continuous appealing to those who want facility can contact our office for further details. Valmiki Ambedkar Malin Basti Awas Yojana (VAMBAY) Follow-up for other houses continued this month. Survey is going on in Ghatkopar and Bhandup areas. Slum Intervention Project 4 days Experience Sharing & Review Meeting (ESRM) held at Anand Training Centre, Juhu during 26th February to 1st March for evaluation of the work done from July 06 to December 06. 26 NGOs from the different part of Mumbai and Mrs. Anna Joy, Director AVERT Association, guided about the problems faced in execution of work as well as discussed about the new guideline for preparing MTR, Rapport build-up, youth participation etc. Similarly, Ms. Sukanya Poddar, AVERT Consultant, discussed and guided on the NGO planning for PSV visit to be held in the month of March. All the regular activities, like BCC Event, One to One, One to Group Sessions, Condom Promotion & Distribution, Tertiary Visit, Secondary Visit, Video Shows, Lectures, Posters Exhibitions, Establishment of Condom Outlets, Treatment and Followup of STD patients, have been done. PALAVI KENDRA – (‘S’ Ward) This month 1825 families have been visited which includes 2183 male, 1841 female get benefited through one to one counselling. 17 ANC cases found in all. 9 have been mobilized and referred to our centres at 4 numbers of meetings was held during the month with Anganwadi Mahila Mandals, where IEC material and booklets for awareness distributed among them. A 2 days training programme for Mahila Mandals in association with Mumbai District AIDS Control Society (MDACS) also arranged during the month at BTVM Centre, Bhandup on 27-28 February. 57 ladies from different mandals were participated and get benefited. Dr. Medha Somaiya, Gen. Secretary of Yuvak Pratishthan inaugurated the training programme and guided the participants. PALAVI – (‘E’ Ward) This month in ‘E’ Ward area, our Out Reach Workers had direct interactions with 3248 families, which includes 3652 male and 3158 female. They were counselled, guided and given proper guidance on health related matters, HIV & PPTCT Centre, Prevention and Family Planning. In all, No cases found of opportunistic infections. 55 ANC cases found, out of which 8 have been referred to Nair Hospital PPTCT Centre. 2 cases found suffering from Tuberculosis referred to Nair hospital DOT centre for further treatment and care. 2 cases of Candidacies have been referred to STD Centres. We have covered 2,27,119 population of this ward, under which 9 ANC cases are found +ve in this ward. This month +ve ANC women meeting was held at Cable connection started this month for the 13 TV sets installed in the wards for the patients. Motivation and empowerment of the patients continues with the techniques such as Music Therapy, Yoga, Diet and Nutrition, Biogas Plant and Vocational Training for Rehabilitation of TB patients. Every week 15-20 patients, which includes both male & female have been attending and taking benefits of yoga every Monday. Yuvak Pratishthan’s Samarpan Arogya Kendra: In the month of December, a total of 871 patients, which includes 247 new and 624 old, visited the centre and benefited through allopathic and homeopathic medication. 27 patients treated with homeopathic which includes 11 new and 16 old patients. 28 patients visited to pathological cases. In all, 10-15% cases registered of Asthama, 5% of Diabetes, 30% Chronic Arthritis, 50% cases are suffering from Viral Fever. Asthama and Chronic Arthritis cases referred for homeopathy treatment, Diabetes referred to Helpage Mobile General Check–up camps continue. 2 camps held this month in Mulund area. We request the citizen of Mulund, Bhandup and all nearby areas to visit the centre and take benefits of all the medication / health related problems from our centre. Jeevan Akshay(Seva Mobile) : In the month of February, 4 camps were held at Ramabai Nagar, Bhandup, where 207 persons visited and get benefited through complete check-up, proper guidance and also provided medicines. This includes 39 New & 168 Old patients. At Kamraj Nagar, Ghatkopar, 4 camps were held where 268 persons performed complete check-up and provided medicines. 3 cases of STI / STD registered at Ramabai Nagar in this month. All of general check-ups like fever, blood pressure etc. were distributed medicines. Centre for Slum Studies : In the month of February, workshop conducted under Solid waste management. A seminar on P-South ward held this month under CSS by the student of SWM Dattak Basti Yojana. Mr. R. R. Markandey, Dy. Commissioner, Environment and SWM, inaugurated the seminar. Lectures given, poster exhibitions, experience sharing sessions were arranged by the students.
