Dear Friends,

 

Four days workshop on ‘Family Health Education and HIV / AIDS’ conducted during the month between 16 – 19 October, at Ruia College, Matunga under Centre for Slum Studies.  All Counsellors & Out Reach Workers of Yuvak Pratishthan participated in the workshop to update their knowledge and to obtain qualitative outcome from their field work.   

 

Four topics were discussed in all.  1) HIV / AIDS NACO Components for which the Resource person was Dr. R.R. Shinde of KEM Hospital, Mumbai, 2) Counseling Component – the Resource person was Ms. Anuradha from NPSS, 3) Pre & Post HIV – the Resource person was Dr. Kasabe from Nair Hospital and 4) Family Health Education Component for which Dr. H.B. Singh from ARCON was the Resource person.

 

It was discussed and suggested in the workshop to organise a Workshop on HIV/AIDS and Law that will be very helpful to handle marital cases related with HIV/AIDS in our vicinity.

 

Another Workshop on Solid Waste Management was conducted between 26th - 28th October at the same venue under Centre for Slum Studies.   

 

Foreword given by Dr. Medha Somaiya, Gen. Secretary of Yuvak Pratishthan, she welcomed all the participants and expressed heartiest gratitude for their active participation in the workshop and guided on the ‘Environmental Importance of SWM’.

 

Topics discussed on Day I were 1) Opportunity in Environmental Science for which the Resource person was Mrs. Kashmira and Mrs. Pallavi; 2) Municipal Waste Management was discussed by Mrs. Seema Redkar, O.S.D., M.C.G.M. ; 3) Hazardous Waste Management – the Resource person were Mr. Vikram Shenvi from NEERI and Mr. Anil Lad, AMC, KDMC.  

 

On the another day the session started with the topic 1) Innovative Approaches in SWM - the Resource person was Mr. S.S. Bhagwat from MCGM ; 2) Opportunities in SWM Maharashtra  - the Resource person was Mr. Sudhir Raut, CO, Ambernath ;

 

Panel Discussion on People’s Participation in SWM Chaired by Prof. Sathe from Ruia College under which the topics were 1) ALM (Advance Locality Management) - Ms. Priya Ubale, 2) SWM and Rag pickers - Jyoti Mhapuskar from Stree Mukti Sangathana and 3) Slum Adoption Scheme - Mr. Anand Jagtap from MCGM, were present for Q&A Session.

 

The last session was ‘Biomedical Waste Management’ for which Resource person Mr. Jaiswal from Tata Memorial Hospital guided and provided training.

 

The last day, Field Orientation visit was conducted under guidance of Dr. Medha Somaiya.  The participants were visited 1) Shatabdi Hospital Waste Collection at Govandi ; 2) BARC Waste Management Plan ; 3) Tata Memorial Hospital Biochemical Plant ; 4) Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation SWM Department ; and Pet Bottle Recycling Plan Mahim.

 

SLUM  SANITATION

This month we have conducted locality meetings at Bhatwadi hatkopar (W), Tulshetpada Bhandup (W) and Vikhroli Parksight Vikhroli (W).  There was a good response from the locality.  

 

During meeting it is observed that locality residence were facing locality registration with government body and since it is one of the requirement of BMC locality residence were not coming forward to participate in the scheme.  we requested locality leader to contact our office to understand the procedure of getting Mandals register with Charity Commissioner.  Three localities come forward for registration.  We have helped them in all respect and got the registration number and their files for common toilet demand are submitted to BMC.  Soon we will get work order to start work in the locality.

 

We are concentrating on Tembipada Bhandup, Ramabai Nagar Ghatkopar and Parksight Vikhroli and hope to bring some localities under this project.

We are receiving good responses fro the locality.  Everyday about 8 to 10 telephone calls used to receive for finding out further details.

We will be happy to help some more localities to provide with the same facility.  Those who want facility can contact our office for further details.

 

Valmiki Ambedker Malin Basti Awas Yojana (VAMBAY):

Work continued this month of the houses of Ghatkopar area stated in last months newsletter.  Follow-up continues.

GTB   HOSPITAL

Motivation and empowerment of the patients of GTB Hospital continues with the techniques such as Music Therapy, Yoga, Diet and Nutrition, Biogas Plant and Vocational Training for Rehabilitation of TB patients.

15-20 patients, which includes both male & female have been attending and taking benefits of yoga every Monday.  

 

Yuvak Pratishthan’s Samarpan Arogya Kendra:

In the month of October, a total of 768 patients, which includes 231 new and 537 old, visited the centre and benefited through allopathic and homeopathic medication.  

 

In all, 13 Asthama, 9 Diabetes, 13 Chronic Arthritis and 11 Cardiac cases found.  Asthama and Chronic Arthritis cases referred for homeopathy treatment, Diabetes referred to Helpage India for further treatment and care.  

 

Regular Mobile General Check –up camps continues.  10 camps held this month in Mulund area.  189 patients visited the camp which includes 162 new and 94 old patients were performed complete health check-up at nominal charge of Rs.10 for Registration and Rs.5 for medicine. We request the citizen of Mulund, Bhandup and all nearby areas to visit the centre and take benefits of all the medication / health related problems from our centre.

 

PALAVI – (‘S’ Ward)

3800 families have been visited in the month which includes 4779 male, 5138 female get benefited through one to one counselling.  68 ANC cases found.  18 have been referred to our centres at Savitribai Maternity Home & Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital .  2 male, 1 female agreed for voluntary testing.  They have been referred to VCTC.  17 Tuberculosis patients (10 male & 5 female) were sent to DOT centre for further treatment and care. 100 cases of Diabetes found and referred for further treatment.

 

PALAVI  – (‘E’ Ward)

This month in ‘E’ Ward area, our Out Reach Workers had direct interactions with 3397 families, which includes 3792 male and 4129 female.  They were counselled, guided and given proper guidance on health related matters, HIV & PPTCT Centre, Prevention and Family Planning.

 

In all, No cases found of opportunistic infections.  54 ANC patients found, out of which 11 have been referred to Nair Hospital PPTCT Centre.  1 case found suffering from Tuberculosis.  6 cases of Candidacies have been referred to STD Centres. 205 cases of Diabetes were found.  

 

We would like to mention here that we have covered 1,56,524 population of this ward in 7 months from January to October, under which 32 ANC cases are found +ve in this ward.

 

Jeevan Akshay(Seva Mobile) :

In the month of October, 4 camps were held at Ramabai Nagar.  152 beneficiaries checked, guided and provided medicines, which includes 36 New & 116 Old patients.

 

In all 3 cases of STI / STD have been registered & referred for further treatment.  Others are for general check-ups like fever, blood pressure etc. were distributed medicines.

 

Jeevan Aasha

In the month of September, 62 patients have visited our office and registered under Jeevan Aasha.  78 patients have received financial assistance this month from different Trusts.  Others are under process.  The following chart is showing the category of the patients / cases:

Apart from this, we have received more than 800 phone calls for enquiry / assistance during the month.

 

3 Patients screened for CT-Scan & 4 MRI cases forwarded to private institutions to be done at very concessional rates i.e. upto 60% & 50% discount respectively in their charges.

 

We are receiving regular appreciation and gratitude from the patients.

 

Slum Intervention Project

All the regular activities, like BCC Event, One to One, One to Group Sessions, Condom Promotion & Distribution, Tertiary Visit, Secondary Visit, Video Shows, Lectures, Posters Exhibitions, Establishment of Condom Outlets, Treatment and Followup of STD patients, have been done.
