WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY 2008: World No Tobacco Day is observed every year on May 31st. Cancer Patients Aid Association teamed up with the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to make this year a memorable one. The theme was "TOBACCO FREE YOUTH". A number of events in line with this topic were organized from 24th May to 31st May.
24th May: SKIT COMPETITION: 30 teams from different colleges in Mumbai participated in a skit competition. The judges were Ms. Vineet Gill, National Professional Officer, (Tobacco Free Initiative) (WHO); Mr. B K Prasad, Joint Secretary (Health), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare; Dr. Vinayak Prasad, Director (Public Health), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare; Dr. Surendra Shastri, Head- Preventive Oncology Dept, (Tata Memorial Hospital) and Mr. Y.K. Sapru, Chairman and CEO, CPAA. The Jai Hind team stood first, followed by EMDI and KC Colleges.
PRESS CONFERENCE: To publicize the issues involved in tobacco control, CPAA organized a press conference which was addressed by Mr. Milind Soman (Actor/Model); Mr. Arjun Rampal (Actor/Model); Mr. A.N. Roy (Director General of Police); Mr. Y.K. Sapru (Chairman and CEO, CPAA); Dr. Paramita Sudharto (Public Health Administrator, WHO). They spoke about their support to tobacco control and felicitated artistes from the music industry for their enthusiastic participation in a concert to publicize the issue. The programme was compered by Mr. Tarun Ratnani of Radio Mirchi 98.3FM.
25th May: MUSICAL INDUSTRY SUPPORTS TOBACCO CONTROL: A Musical concert involving 14 artistes helped spread the message of the dangers associated with tobacco abuse. Inaugurated by Viveik Oberoi, Farah Khan, Tanuja Chandra, the evening saw performances by Shweta Pandit, Raman Mahadevan, Anusha Mani, Akriti Kakkar, Mahalakshmi Iyer, Baba Sehgal, Javed Ali, Sowmya Rao, Madhushree, Srinivas Iyer and ended with a spectacular act by Shankar Ehsan Loy. Celebrities Tara Sharma and Shilpa Agnihotri gave anti tobacco messages. The programme was sponsored by Nokia, Sony Television, State Bank of India, Taj Lands End, Radi Mirchi, Bharat Petroleum, Hotel Rangsharada, Indian Oil, Kodak, FS Public Relations, Bright Outdoor Media, MidDay, Milllionaire and SWAT.
29th May: FREE ENT CHECK UP: A Free mega ENT checkup camp was held at Naigaon Police Station for Policemen and their families on 29th May 2008. Mr. Hemant Karkare, Joint Commissioner of Police inaugurated the event which was presided over by chief guest Ms. Varsha Usgaonkar. The ENT checkups were performed by Dr. Asit Gore and Dr. Milind Khare. A Skit was also enacted by Kamgar Kalyan Bhavan, Andheri. Over 600 policemen and their family members took advantage of the facility.
31st May: CRICKET MATCH: A Cricket Match was organized at MIG Club, Bandra (E) on World No Tobacco Day, 31st May 2008. Celebrities from all walks of life participated in this match. Dr. Anil Deshmukh (Minister, Maharashtra State); Mr. Ajit Wadekar, Mr. Ashok Mankad, Mr. Karsan Ghavri (cricketers), Mr. Sammer Dharmadhikari, Mr. Mukesh Tiwari, Mr. Govind Namdev, Ms. Anupama Verma, Mr. Aryan Vaid (film personalities), Mr. Anoop Jalota, Mr. Dilip Pankule, Mr. Dinesh Ghodke (celebrities), doctors from Tata Memorial, Hinduja, KEM and Nanavati Hospitals and cancer patients participated in this match.
DILKHULAS: Mrs. Neeta More, Dr. Rajendra Badwe, Dr. Mandakini Purandare and breast cancer patients were invited for the talk �DILKHULAS� based on breast cancer. This was broadcast on the 'ME MARATHI' channel on 16th May 2008.
HEALTH EXHIBITION: A health exhibition was organized on 31st May 2008 at Kamathipura. This was done with the support of Committed Communities Development Trust (CCDT) to create awareness about the ill effects of tobacco and smoking. the ill effects of tobacco and smoking.
HEALTH MELA: A Health Mela was held at Convergys India Services Pvt. Ltd., Thane on 22nd May 2008. Anti Smoking spots were shown and awareness material on oral cancer was distributed. A similar exhibition is to be be organized at all Convergys locations country wide.

PROGRAMME FOR PATIENTS COURTESY VASWANI TRUST On 3rd May 2008, the Diagnostic & Patient Care department with support of Vaswani Trust organized a program at the Nalanda hall to fulfill the wishes of 35 cancer patients. The children were first entertained by a magician who performed tricks. A Vaswani Trust volunteer, Kanchan sang songs with the children after which they were given gifts - each painstakingly chosen and addressed to the child concerned. Finally snacks were served. Trust members said that they worked to give happiness to people around them and that afternoon's efforts had rewarded them for their hard work.
BOOKLETS FOR CANCER AVAILABLE IN REGIONAL LANGUAGES CPAA has published booklets on Chemotherapy and Radiation to answer queries and provide information regarding how to cope with Cancer treatments. The original English booklet has been translated to various regional languages like:- Hindi, Gujarati and Bengali. Marathi translation is under process at the moment. TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR VOLUNTEERS Cancer Patients Aid Association organized its third certificate programme to train volunteers in cancer counseling. A group of 14 volunteers attended a three day workshop in which topics such as importance of counseling, exploring the individual's motivation, grief and loss, role of the counselor, developing skills, ethical issues, burnout and self care were covered. The programme will be conducted every month by Annette Raposo, Susmita Mitra and Shubha Maudgal.
