Bandra skywalk to be ready by Jan next year

Mumbai: The Bandra skywalk project is expected to be completed by January next year. MMRDA officials have already consulted local residents about the project, which will ease the pedestrian flow between the railway station and Hill road in Bandra west.

Taking note of suggestions, the officials have made a few changes in the plan. It was decided that instead of a ramp, there will be escalators to ease the traffic. “The Bandra talao and Bada masjid are highly congested areas. Ramps will just cause more traffic problems and won’t be convenient for vehicles. We will have escalators instead,’’ said MMRDA commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad.

Local corporator Asif Zakaria said all decisions were taken keeping in mind the needs of the citizens. “One of the drops of the skywalk was supposed to be at the junction of Lucky restaurant. But since it is a very crowded area, we agreed to have a drop slightly further. So we will have it near Bandra police station on Hill Road,’’ he said.

The skywalk project was initiated as part of the MMRDA’s larger initiative to make it easier for commuters to access the station. The skywalk, which is popular in Western countries, allows commuters to come to the station and leave it without crossing crowded roads. The Bandra skywalk project has begun in the east but will be extended to the west, where it will allow commuters to walk from Bandra station to the police station on Hill Road. Another arm will take the commuters to Bandra talao.
