Mumbai: The Maharashtra government is contemplating online registration and outsourcing to streamline the functioning of the RTO in the city, the legislative council was told.
Speaking during the question hour, chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said the process of computerisation had already begun and the government was considering the online registration facility to be provided to citizens.
Experts opinion is being sought, he said, adding that the option of outsourcing was also being considered. “This would help ease the burden on the department and subsequent delays.’’
“The entire revenue generated by the RTO department goes to the state exchequer and if the outsourcing model is accepted, the government will have to part with the revenue. More deliberations are required on this issue,’’ the CM said.
Deshmukh said measures like computerisation and online registration would help strengthen and modernise the department. The chief minister was responding to the main question by Nitin Gadkari and Vinod Tawde, both of the BJP, on steps being undertaken to improve the functioning of the RTO department.
Tawde wanted to know if the government will increase the number of RTO offices in the metropolis. Deshmukh said in Mumbai, 500-550 new vehicles are registered every day. About 1,500 new learning licenses are issued, while over 90 new licences are given every day.
He admitted that corruption prevailed in the department and said the steps to be taken to streamline the functioning would help curb the menace. TNN
