THE CIVIC body in a meeting on Thursday cleared the policy plan for an underground car park in the city The Bri . hanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has drafted a policy for constructing underground and multi-storied parking spaces.

The move is meant to deal with the alarming number of vehicles hitting Mumbai's roads daily - there are at least 250 new cars added to the city's roads everyday and the number is expected to increase.

BJP leader Bhalchandra Shirsat said the move would give relief to motorists. "We need to speed up its construction. It would also free up the roads and make traffic movements smoother," he added.

The underground as well as multi-storied parking lots will be built by the BMC in partnership with private operators. It also plans to make road parking more expensive to dissuade motorists from parking elsewhere.

Institutions like the Indian Institute of Technology would be roped in to identify feasible spots for construction.
