bio-diesel run - Now, city\'s big red bus plans to paint the town green...Naresh Kamath THE BRIHANMUMBAI Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking will now use bio-diesel mixed with regular diesel for buses, in a bid to reduce pollution.
"Initial tests have shown that the rate of smoke emission is reduced considerably with this fuel," said BEST General Manager Uttam Khobragade. "Initially, we will mix 10 per cent of bio-diesel with regular diesel.
That will gradually be increased to 20 per cent." Recently BEST tried bio-diesel , on some buses for about a month. The experiment showed that it did not cause damage to bus engines.
The BEST will save Rs 1.36 crore per annum, as a litre of bio-diesel costs Rs 31.34 as against Rs 36.11 for regular diesel.
"It is good effort. Steps must also be taken to encourage eco-friendly public transport," said Congress corporator Ravi Raja.
