Mangroves on NMMC plot hacked Yogesh Naik | TNN Mumbai: The mangroves on a plot of land meant for the proposed Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) headquarters have been removed. Thane tehsildar Nandkumar Koshte has filed a case against "unknown persons'' even though there are reports that NMMC had ordered the removal of the mangroves. The mangroves were removed from a plot on CBD sector 15A at the junction of Palm Beach Marg and Uran road. According to NMMC sources, the plot was given to the organisation about two years ago and work on the proposed headquarters commenced recently. Koshte told TOI, "There were very few mangroves at the spot. There was a complaint and I had gone there for inspection. I don't know who has cut the mangroves, so we have lodged a complaint against unknown persons.'' Sources in CIDCO said a c o m p l a i n t should have been lodged against NMMC officials responsible for the headquarter construction project or the contractor carrying out the work. "The revenue department and the tehsildar seems to have gone soft on NMMC as it is a semi-government organisation,'' said the source. The tehsildar's action came after the high court ordered a committee to report on the removal of mangroves in various parts of the state. The NMMC, however, denies that there was any hacking of mangroves. NMMC city engineer Mohan Daghavkar said: "The construction of a headquarter for NMMC has been pending since the past 14 years and some people are trying to create impediments. The land has been handed over to us by Cidco and there were no mangroves on the spot. How can one government organisation (Cidco) give a plot to another (NMMC) knowing that there will be trouble? Neither we nor the contractor has cut any mangrove.'' On the case registered by the tehsildar, Daghavkar said: "The tehsildar must have registered a case because someone lodged a complaint and he did not want any one to blame him. But we have not violated any rules.'' Rishi Agarwal, joint secretary of the Mangroves Society of India, said: "This is a serious matter. It appears that even after 26/7, the government is not serious about warding off threats to mangroves, which acts as holding ponds for flood water.'' yogesh.naik@timesgroup.com MISSING MANGROVES URL : http://epaper.timesofindia.com/Repository/ml.asp?Ref=VE9JTS8yMDA3LzAyLzE1I0FyMDEwMDA=&Mode=HTML&Locale=english-skin-custom
