9) Rain Water Harvesting:
What is Rain Water
Harvesting? – It is harvesting the rain water during Monsoon storing it
either in man made tanks or natural acquafins and use it for secondary purpose
as per the requirements. Large amount of rain water goes wasted in the drains
every year which otherwise is a good source if harvested through Rain Water
Harvesting Projects.
The First Rain Water
Harvesting project was initiated by Rotary Club of Bombay at Sane
Guruji Udyan with the garden area of 6,000 sq. mtrs. The estimated quantity of
rain water that is being put into use is approximately one Crore Ltrs. of
water every year. Municipal water to that extent will be saved which will be
available for diversion to residential areas adjoining the site and as per the
Municipal Corporation estimates, it will provide approximately 40 families ( 5
members per family drinking water for 24 hours throughout the year.
Rain water
Harvesting Project is an ideal solution to the needs of the public utility
places such as gardens where presently supplies of drinking water is consumed.
Rain water harvesting projects helps maintaining greenery and gardens and now
drinking water needs of hospitals and schools. Two other such public utility
places which otherwise require huge quantities of continuous supply of water
for the secondary purpose. Resultantly, the treated drinking water so saved
will be diverted to the citizens for the overall benefits of society.
Why harvest Rooftop Rain-water in Urban areas
1.
To meet the ever increasing
demand for water against diminishing supply.
2.
To reduce the runoff which
chokes strom drains and avoid flooding of roads.
3.
To recharge the ground water
4.
To reduce ground water
pollution and improve the quality of ground water.
5.
To reduce the soil erosion.
6.
To supplement domestic water
requirement during summer , draught etc.
Who can harvest Rain water:
1.
Schools, Colleges, Hospitals,
Clubs, Gymkhanas.
2.
Housing Societies, Bungalows,
Commercial and factory premises.
3.
Farm Houses.
How to harvest Rain water:
The field parameters
prevailing at site have to be identified, like geology, storage capacity, user
profile, consumption pattern, etc. A domain expert can then generate an
optimum design based on the above, site specific depending on the values. It
involves laying of pipes, etc. by a professional plumber and needs minimum
maintenance thereafter.
Cost:
500 sq. mtrs. Roof
top on 1,000 sq. mtr. plot should cost at a special rate for Rotary at
Rs.10,000/-.
This assumes typical conditions which involve no additional storage and
helpful geo-strata.
Additional services like boring wells etc. would add upt cost, but harvesting
roof top precipitation is definitely viable against tanker supply. You may
undertake the Rainwater Harvesting projects in schools, gardens, parks,
Residential building and Municipal Schools.
For Private Schools, buildings, you have to obtain permission from concerned
owners whereas for Municipal Schools, parks and gardens permission is to be
taken from local BMC. Asstt. Commissioner.
Once you identify the Park/Building/Schools or any other place, an expert
opinion is to be obtained. Contact Mr. Janak Daftary on Cell No. 93222292908
who has a team of experts specially for the Rainwater Harvesting Projects.
Obtain the Blue print of the premises/site from the concerned authorities.
Designing, estimate and approvals have to be done by concerned authorities.
MOU has to be made between Rotary and Concerned authority.
Example:
You may even contact
Mr. Nimesh on e-mail nimesh@corpbase.com.
Nimesh has implemented a rain water harvesting system in his society where he
has saved at least 40 thousand liters of water in one season from a terrace
outlet from an area of about only 1500 sq. ft. The same was done with a budget
of about Rs.13,000/- only. It is very simple and needs very low maintenance.
This water is used only for washing vehicles, cleaning and watering purpose,
hence no filtration expenses. The water collections depends on the terrace
area.
Requirements:
A. Floor
space for a 6 ft. diameter water tank. Height about 8 ft.
B. Water
Tank ( used are available for Rs.10,000/- for a 6 thousand ltr. Capacity.
C. Plumbing
material of about Rs. 2,000/-
