MUMBAI RENEWAL PLAN BY UNITED WAY MUMBAI

Background : Mumbai is on a Brink of a Collapse :  

  • Increasing population
  • Mushrooming slums 
  • Encroachment on public land
  • Traffic boom
  • Garbage disposal
  • Weak physical infrastructure
  • Weak crisis management machinery
  • Strain on utilities and infrastructure. 

And the recent floods have exposed multiple problems that are existent. There is a need for concrete action.

Proposal : The Mumbai Renewal Plan  

  • Ward Adoption Program
  • Mumbai Resource Center 

II.          The Ward Adoption Program :  

  1. United Way will engage one or more corporates to adopt one ward each
  2. United Way will work with local grassroots NGOs in building a Ward Development Plan
  3. United Way seek corporate participation in the Ward Development Plan
  4. United Way acts as a catalyst between corporates, NGOs and BMC
  5. United Way builds the necessary synergy across all wards
  6. United Way will work with NGOs in enabling Citizenship Complaint Registration and follow up at BMC
  7. United Way will engage academic institutions to also adopt wards
  8. United Way will help corporates create the ideal ward.
  9. Corporate expertise in planning, implementation, mon itoring
  10. NGO participation in understanding and communicating community needs
  11. NGOs help execute projects at grassroots level

The Ward Adoption Program – Next Steps 

1. Prioritize 23 Wards and select 7 which needs urgent attention 

2. Participatory identification of high-level problem buckets such as 
    Cleanliness, 
    Drainage, 
    Orphanages-children, 
    Traffic-Noise pollution, 
    Health-Ambulance, 
    Hospitals, 
    School/college participation, 
    Slum rehabilitation, 
    Police

3. Create BMC database for each ward build linkages, facilitate complaint registration by citizens and action by BMC. 

4. Dedicated corporate “Problem Teams” study each bucket in depth and develop  individual workplans, timeframes, budget and sustainability plan

5 .Resource mobilization from Corporates, Employees, Foundations, Interest Groups  

6. Implementation by United Way in partnership with grassroot NGOs

Mumbai Resource Center :  

The Mumbai Resource center will provide online information on:

-         Civic administration, authorities and services.

-         Grassroot Level Network of NGO’s/Individuals/institutions

-         Disaster Preparedness Information

-         First Level Neighborhood Ownership program overview

-         Twenty four hour helpline Service
