Rainwater harvesting model for King George School, Dadar
Nine students from IES College of Architecture at
Bandra Reclamation have won the first prize at an all-India competition,
Harvest to Harness 2004, for their project on rainwater harvesting.
We finally decided to create a rainwater
harvesting model for King George School, Dadar. Not only is it part of IES,
but we also found that it was facing water problems.” The project involves
collecting the rainwater in the huge space otherwise occupied by the courtyard
and then supplying it to tanks.
Adds another student Kalawati Mahajan, “The school has over 20,000 students
and staff and a huge 8,000 sq metre courtyard.We calculated that it would cost
the school Rs two lakh to implement the project. They will save Rs one lakh a
year after its implementation.”
The students have also been approached by the
Indian navy’s engineering department to work out a similar project for them.
