DNA : Ngo spreads aids awareness : Sept 28,2007 ngo spreads aids awareness they organised a free medical checkup camp rita ghose. bandra salvation army, an ngo working against poverty and social injustice have set up a free general medical camp in gyaneshwar nagar, bandra (e) with the aim of spreading awareness about aids. two doctors have been appointed to talk to the people coming in and to administer medicine along with referring them for further medical examination in certain cases. the whole aim behind the camp is to be able to detect those who may be suffering from aids, tb and other diseases. the team also organised street plays and puppet shows in the area to educate people on aids. sheetal, a volunteer helping out with the camp said, "we are focusing on care and support for people suffering from hiv. we are trying to get across the message that a person affected by the disease can live with it. the general health camp will give doctors a chance to inquire about a person's health. if they suspect anything major they can send them for further investigations. we are providing free medicine and counseling for all." it was not just a run of the mill aids awareness camp, but they got the attention of people around through an interesting medium of live puppets along with street plays at various places in the area. they also set up information stores, which besides information also held games regularly to make things interesting. dr amit agarkar and dr anuradha patil were the two doctors who lent a hand to this noble cause. several bandra locals are also involved in helping the salvation army in various ways. involving the locals is another way of them reaching out and getting the message across. major jassi, the project in-charge from salvation army who used to work with an orphanage prior to heading this project came across several hiv positive children and feels that it is a major concern because it is an incurable disease. according to her, it is important to tell people about how they can protect themselves and others around them from this dreaded disease. she told dna westcoast, "i am currently monitoring the project, but i have been able to reach out to people suffering from this disease and have been able to help them financially as well as with counselling." for all those who would like to start doing something towards the cause of helping people infected with the disease as well as counseling hiv positive people, major jassi suggests, "if you have concern for people suffering from aids and want to help spread awareness about the disease, it would be great to start from your own community. people should take on their own communities helping the people form those communities receive the right medical attention and care. one can refer hiv affected people to hospitals nearby or could even contact us." g_rita@dnaindia.net Publication : DNA; Section : Westcost; Pg :3; Date : 28/9/07 URL : http://digital.dnaindia.com/epapermain.aspx?edorsup=Sup&queryed=33&querypage=3&boxid=30921944&parentid=48824&eddate=09/28/2007 |
