Mumbai: It has been said that water will be “the oil of the 21st century’’. Spreading awareness about water that gets wasted every day either because of leaking taps or old flush systems, the sheriff of Mumbai, Indu Shahani, launched a drive to “Save Water’’ on Sunday.
About 25 students from H R College of Commerce conducted an awareness campaign outside the Gateway of India and at Colaba Causeway. A helpline—1800 22 9333—launched a while ago (along with a firm making water purifiers to stop leaking taps) has been getting few calls and Sunday’s campaign aimed at promoting
this helpline. “Anyone noticing a leaking tap can call on this number and a registered plumber will come and fix the tap at a nominal cost,’’ said Govind Shorewala, a first year BCom student. Each day, about 6 million litres of water are wasted because of leaking taps.
Students also spoke to tourists and passers-by on ways to cut down on use of water. “Have a bucket bath instead of a shower, turn off the tap while brushing or shaving,’’ and other suggestions like installing the dual flush system were printed on the fliers that students distributed. With the BMC cutting down on the water supply per person from 135 litres a day to 90 litres, students said their campaign would help people fight water shortage.
