Mumbai first priority would be overall development of a large scale mass rapid transport system. Today Mumbai facing acute shortage of mass transportation. To overcome this, Railway can play a pivotal role in improving the Mumbai infrastructure. As part of this project Railway need to improve the existing infrastructure by adding more lines and the existing frequency should be increased. New additional line need to laid down by adding new trains.
BEST should be privatized and big and small private players should be allowed. This will increase competition. Hence govt. get more revenue and consumer will get cost effective services. By privatizing BEST services the existing revenue loss can be avoided. The existing monopoly of public transport service of BEST should be stopped in the larger public interest.
The existing metro project should also be increased to other areas also where the consumer have an option for a cost effective and safe ride. Mumbai’s infrastructure development means not just high rise buildings. It need an overall holistic development. Selective development on some area like reality sector will be burdened Mumbai further. Mumbai make over is possible only with the development of neighbouring districts also. We need a time bound (without bureaucratic and political obstruction) rapid transport system to decongest the existing local railways as well as the ‘ailing’ BEST services. Decongestion of the road is essential part of this infrastructure development by removing all encroachments in a time bound manner and need an action plan to get out of this mess of ailing infrastructure. If there is a will, there is a way.
Our policy makers need a long term vision and we should begin now to improve and encourage such systems in the long run. Even other countries like developed nations also going to follow the same due to rising energy prices across the globe.
We also need to improve hassle free, and fast mass freight corridor across the nation and public need to get efficient service, then people start abandoning to hold individual vehicles and depend on mass transport system. We need to create a long term policy on this issue and the work need to start at the earliest in this area. |
