Feb 10: Mumbai : Euro Enviro Quiz 2007
Dear Friends,
This environment is not the legacy of our forefathers to use as we please; But a loan we have taken from our grandchildren to be repaid with an interest.
We, at Eureka Forbes Institute of Environment, are pleased to extend an invitation to you to witness the All India Finals of the "Euro Enviro Quiz 2007" on February 10th in Mumbai. You will shout, cheer and clap for the Environment Champions, whose average is 14, as they face questions posed to them from a question bank prepared by professionals on the subject of environment. These school students represent the best of 300 schools in the 16 cities around the country who have risen through school, city and region level to face the finals in Mumbai on February 10th.
This is the fifth consecutive year of widening scope, growing participation and increasing depth of this program which forms a part of "e-initiatives" - a program which aims to create role models among Indian schools and their students who will not only become Eco-friendly themselves but also spread the gospel in their social circles and communities. Apart from the Euro Enviro Quiz, the other salient features of this program are 1. Principals and Teachers in each of these 16 cities have come forward to form "School Councils" to promote environmental awareness, education and practice.
2. An "e certification" program has commenced which will serve as progress monitor as well as a motivation to excel on Eco-friendliness.
3. A student awareness program "enviro revolution" about Eco friendly practices like recycling, saving power, water conservation, cleaning and greening.
For your information, Eureka Forbes Institute of Environment is a not-for-profit public charity organization which believes that "Pollution Free Air and Water is our children's birthright". Its approach is mainly through education of certain sections of the society using the ICE formula : Information, Communication and Education. The institute runs four active programs as of today and each is headed by a capable program director.
1. POLLUTION WATCH : The institute operates "Environment Research Centers" in 14 cities all over the country to monitor the levels of harmful pollutants in the groundwater as well as in the ambient air of these cities regularly. The water pollutants measured are "harmful bacteria" and "brackishness". The air pollutants measured are SPM (Suspended Particulate Matter), SO2 and NOx. These readings are given to NDTV every day for them to make their daily weather bulletin called POLLUTION WATCH on this basis.
2. USE COURSE : A 2 day course called "U.S.E." ( Uniting to Safeguard the Environment ) is now being offered in selected cities for use by companies who wish to train their employees to be Eco friendly. The charges are extremely nominal.
3. RAINWATER HARVESTING : Though Mumbai is blessed with an abundant rainfall, there is an increasing shortage of water because we let the water go down the drain instead of letting it seep into the ground and get stored. Now even the Mumbai Municipal Corporation is recommending rainwater harvesting. It is not very expensive and it is possible for people to increase their own supply of good quality water. Eureka Forbes Institute of Environment has now a rain water harvesting cell that provides free advice and workshops to groups wanting to do rainwater harvesting in Mumbai.
4. WATERX CENTERS : We have a knowledge center is Chennai and a unique park located opposite Portuguese Church at Dadar in Mumbai. It was inaugurated by the Honorable Governor of Maharashtra, Shri S. M. Krishna and the uniqueness of the park lies in not only being a place for people to walk and enjoy the green view but it is also a virtual open air museum for education on water conservation and it also provides world class caring and recreational facilities for the physically handicapped children and for senior citizens above 60 years of age. In this park we demonstrate how simple the rainwater harvesting is. And, for teachers and children who come, we have also made a miniature model which shows children how rainwater harvesting works in the urban as well as rural settings. We also promote recycling through a waste water treatment plant which recycles the water from the toilets using a natural technology called reed bed system. We save 3 Lakh liters annually.
It will be our pleasure to receive you in person on February 10th, 2007.
Sincerely,
Rahul Gomes Eureka Forbes Institute of Environment Tel - (Board) 9122 66604960 -62 Dir - 9122 66622068 Cell - 9122 9821458978 Fax - 9122 66604964
