Jan 16 - 20: Mumbai : Adnika 2007

Wilson College Nature Club is organising a fiveday exhibition from January 16 to January 20, as one of the events for their Nature Week. Titled Adnika 2007, this annual theme based exhibition will be focusing on the Western Ghats this year.

Nearly 50 student-volunteers have been working since December in research work and preparing models and charts for the exhibition. Says TYBMM student and coordinator for the event, Apeksha Haria: "We started the research work in November, while preparations for the main event started in December." The Nature Club, in its 28-year history has organised exhibitions on themes as varied as water conservation and wildlife parks in South Asia. Like most of the earlier exhibitions, this one too focuses on giving the visitor knowledge about the region along with a visual feel of the place."We focused on the Western Ghats because it is a biodiversity hotspot. Besides, there are many species residing in the Western Ghats that are on the endangered list," explains Haria. To recreate the feel of the Western Ghats, the students have created mountains on one side of the walk-through area and placed models of the flora and fauna of the region, and that of each state along the Western Ghats. The exhibition has been divided into state-based sections, and also features a model of Mumbai and the environmental problems plaguing the city. Each section covers varied topics, ranging from the natural species exclusive to the area, the local communities and the importance of the forest in their lives, to the conservation and preservation of the
environment.Students from about 40 colleges and 70 schools, besides activists from 15 environmental NGOs are expected to attend.WE FOCUSED ON THE WESTERN GHATS BECAUSE IT IS A BIODIVERSITY HOTSPOT. BESIDES THERE ARE MANY SPECIES RESIDING IN THE WESTERN GHATS THAT ARE ON THE
ENDANGERED LIST APEKSHA HARIA TYBMM student.
