SNDT WOMEN’S UNIVERSITY’S  DISTANCE EDUCATION AT THE DOOR STEPS

The Centre for Distance Education of SNDT Women’s University which offers various courses like University Entrance Test, B.A., B.Com., M.A. and few short term courses has started a new initiative called, “Distance Education at Doorsteps”. Through this initiative efforts will be made to reach to the un-reached women from slums, tribal and rural areas where the distance education has not reached. This initiative was started on the 23rd August, 2006 at the Beherampada wherein the NGOs like WRAG and Hukuk-e-niswan are joining hands with the centre in Mumbai. Similar efforts will be made with other NGOs in Maharashtra and Gujarat. The first ever ‘Admission Camp’ will be organized in Bandra slums on the 18th September 2006. The admission camp will be held at Stree Bal Shanti, BMC Colony, Kherwadi Road, Bandra East, Mumbai – 55 between 10.00 a.m. and 1 p.m., wherein lot of women will take admissions. This initiative was started under the leadership of Dr. Chandrakant Puri, who has recently taken over as Director of Centre for Distance Education. Dr. Puri is from the Social work background and feels that the universities must reach to the women who are in need of education.

The uniqueness of the SNDT course is that it offers on opportunity to women who have left their education halfway to pursue their further education by passing the University Entrance Test. Once the student pass this test they can enter the B.A./B.Com. Degree Course of the University. The centre admits more than 10,000 students every year.

The centre is also planning various professional courses like LL.M., M.Com. Diploma in Management, certificate course in rural development, women in panchayati raj, self-help group development and sports and nutrition. Prof. Chandra Krishnamurthy, the Vice Chancellor of SNDT Women’s University  has given utmost priority to the distance education and many more new initiatives will be taken up in this year.
