Teaching Reading and Comprehension A TWO-DAY TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR TEACHERS by Ms Lalitha Ramanujan, Director, Alpha to Omega Learning Centre. Competence in reading and comprehension is crucial to academic achievement in any kind of mainstream or vocational education, yet many students with poor reading skills are dogged with difficulties in this area even into adult life. This two-day programme empowers mainstream teachers and special educators alike to build mastery of the required skills at any age. Day 1: An Introduction to the Reading process: Identification, Diagnosis, Reading Rate, Reading Graph, Miscue Analysis Structure Analysis for Multisyllable words. Day 2: Word Identification Strategy Pre-skills to Paraphrasing Visualization & Verbalization Paraphrasing Strategy The programme is designed to equip teachers to determine the level of reading and enhance vocabulary, fluency and understanding of reading matter through the systematic analysis of difficulties and use of strategies from the Learning Strategies Curriculum developed by the University of Kansas Centre for Research on Learning developed by Jean B Schumaker & Donald D Deschler.
