National Legal Literacy Day

 9 November 2006

NALSA resolves to ensure social justice to marginalized communities and empower the poor and disadvantaged sections of society through legal literacy with a focus on poverty alleviation.

National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) is engaged in establishing a nation wide network for providing free, competent and comprehensive legal services to the poor, weaker sections and people in distress.

Functioning of NALSA

Under the directions and guidance of NALSA, State Legal Services Authorities endeavour to District and Taluka/Sub Division level. NALSA and Legal Services Authorities at the State and District . level are engaged in providing free legal aid to the eligible persons and organizing Lok Adalats for amicable settlement of disputes.

Eligible persons for free legal aid

·         Women & Children

·          Members of SC and ST

·         Persons whose annual income does not exceed Rs. 50000

·         Industrial workmen

·         Persons in custody

·         Victims of disasters, ethnic violence, caste atrocities. Flood, drought, earthquake or Industrial disaster.

·         Persons with disabilities as per Disability Act 1995

·         Victims of trafficking or Begar

Free legal aid includes

·         Advocate’s services

·         Court fee

·         Expenses for typing and preparation of petition /documents

·         Expenses for summoning witnesses

·         Other expenses incidental to litigation

Lok Adalats are held for

·        Matrimonial cases

·        Motor accident cases

·        Civil cases

·        Criminal compoundable offence cases

·        Labour disputes

·        Bank recovery cases

·        Disputes with mobile cellular companies

·        Land acquisition cases

·        Pension cases

·        Workmen’ s compensation matters

·        Consumer cases

·        Housing and Slum clearance cases

 Achievements up to 31.8.2006:
More than 5.3 Iakh Lok Adalats held in the country

More than 20 million cases settled
About 1.4 million Motor vehicle accident claims cases settled and compensation to the tune of Rs. 61,659 million awarded

About 8.6 million persons have benefitted through legal aid and advice programme

More than 8.9 lakh women benefitted from Legal Services programme

About 1.5 Iakh persons in custody benefitted from the legal aid service
