Context:         

Media and communications, in the present world are important to provide timely and critical information as and when needed during emergencies and otherwise. The criticality and need of information in the development sector and how communication is highly essential to impart this has to be understood and here is where media & communications play a pertinent role in handling sensitive issues.

 

Communication is crucial for Development – whether in the form of dissemination, guidelines, recommendations, sensitization, advocacy, education, conversation, fundraising or counseling. Sometimes sharing information is the most powerful strategy available. Communication is about providing timely relevant and effective information. It is about fostering social awareness and about building a collective understanding leading to social change.

Objectives:

The principal objectives of the workshop are:

v     Highlighting communications and Media engagement as an integral component of the Development Sector for benefiting communities

v     To examine the role of communication in the broadest sense in shaping, maintaining, transforming and transmitting development initiatives in a variety of settings.

The training consists of structured learning exercises and case-studies. A participatory approach and a high level of interaction among participants and trainers are involved. Experts Profiles:

1          Prof. Vijay Parmar – Indian Institute of Mass Communication 

Prof. Parmar is currently working as a Professor of Oral and Visual Communication and has varied        interests and diverse experience in media and education. He began his career in communication         research and has worked in the field of culture and education for over a decade and half, training           educators and administrators in inter-linking culture, education and communication. He has   contributed in integrating traditional skills of communication with contemporary education          system and developed media resources for non-formal education and has also done extensive    research and documentation in the field of folk media and development    communication.

2          Dr. Ashok Ogra – Appeejay Institute of Mass Communication

Dr. Ashok Ogra, Director of Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi who has 25            years of experience in Television, Radio and Print Journalism started his career with The             Tribune. He      then worked in Doordarshan (Public Broadcaster) for 15 years as Producer and           Director of a Kendra.   He resigned from the government to set up Discovery Channel in South Asia and was the Vice President        for 7 years.

Dr. Ashok Ogra who has traveled widely all over the world has been the Resource Person for AIBD,    UNESCO regional Training Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He is also a member of various       government committees on media and related areas, in India and abroad.

Mr.Ogra is also involved in running an NGO (Aravali Centre for Art & Culture :www.aravalicentre.org)             in Gurgaon aimed at promoting art and culture among the corporate executives.

3          Dr. Abhilasha Kumari, AJK Mass Communication Research Centre Jamia        Milia Islamia

Abhilasha Kumari has 25 years of experience in Teaching and Research in two of the premier institutions of Mass Communication i.e “Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC)” and             AJK   Mass Communication Research Centre Jamia Millia Islamia (MCRC)”. She has also done           extensive research and evaluation of World Bank projects and conducted an evaluation of posters             for a UNICEF campaign on Child Prostitution. She was a member of the UNICEF team that developed a             manual for Journalist on how to report gender issues and evaluated film script for campaign on female          foeticide for UNFPA. Other then developing manual for ‘Monitoring Utilization of Educational     Broadcasts and Studying Factors Affecting Utilization of these Broadcasts’ for the             Commonwealth of Learning Educational Media Centre for Asia. She is currently also the            coordinator for the Research and Training Project sponsored by UNESCO.

4          Ms. Sumita Mehta, CRY-Delhi

Sumita Mehta has spent over 14 years in journalism with magazines and mainline papers, the last of        which was the Times of India. Subsequently, she entered the field of media advocacy and has worked in          this capacity with various projects with USAID, Voluntary Health Association of India(VHAI), CEDPA, Mamta Institute of Health, and is currently Deputy General Manager (Communications) focusing on           Media advocacy in CRY.

5          Nandini Sahai - Asian Media Information and communication centre of India

Nandini Sahai is currently working as the Country Manager in AMIC. She has vast experience of    working on social issues and is a renowned Development Journalist. She has worked as an Associate        Editor of Vidura, and Grassroots (both Press Institute of India (PII) publications on social issues) for 10   years. She also worked as an Assistant editor of Swagat , South Asia Travel Review, Himachal Times     and Depth news            India covering various development issues.

She is one of the proponents of the RTI act and has worked closely with Aruna Roy in creating awareness. She as a developmental Journalist has been associated with various Media sensitization    programme on social issues. She is also a Visiting Faculty at Dept of journalism and Mass          Communication in Delhi University and Indian Institute of Mass communication.

6          Vagish Jha, National Institute of Social Defence

Mr Jha is currently working as a Media consultant for National Institute of Social Defence an apex body of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. He is also a Radio            Producer/ Trainer for PANOS, South-Asia for an innovative community Radio project “Kishor Vani” (Voice of adolescents).  He had worked as the head of Education International and also as a marketing consultant for Electronic Media Production Centre, IGNOU. He has also worked as the        National Media Campaign Manager for UNDP, MOEF, and have also been involved in conceptualizing, designing and producing various Radio and Television Programmes on social development issues. He is also actively involved in a various theater plays, Journalistic activity and research.

7Prof. Jaishree Jethwaney – Indian Institute of Mass Communication

Prof. Jethwaney is currently working as a Professor and Course Director of Advertising and Public        Relations in IIMC, Delhi. She began her career in brand management and has worked for about a   decade in corporate communication and PR. A widely traveled person, Dr. Jethwaney's passionate    interest lies in media and their impact on politics, health communication and issue/advocacy       communication.

Dr. Jethwaney writes for the media and has to her credit the following books: Advertising; Public           Relations: Concept Strategies and Tools (co-author); Public Relations (co-author); Vigyapan aur     Jansampark (co-author ) in Hindi and has contributed chapters in a number of books. She has conducted several research studies in the last decade.

8Ms. Geeta Malhotra, One World South Asia

GEETA MALHOTRA is presently working as Senior Programme Manager and Member, Management            Team at             OneWorld South Asia (www.oneworldsouthasia.net), based in New Delhi, India, and is a part of          the OneWorld Network (www.oneworld.net), an international non-profit network that aims to use ICT       tools ranging from the Internet, mobile telephones to community radio for poverty alleviation and    promoting sustainable development and human rights.

With more than 350 organizations including NGOs, donors, multilateral organizations, private sector,      media, academicians and governments as its partners, OneWorld South Asia is dedicated to “voicing the        voiceless” and harnessing the role of ICTs in achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). It    focuses on developing appropriate programmes and projects, which would enhance communication opportunities, build capacities and explore alternative tools and techniques for empowering the       grassroots. 

9          Bhanu Bharti - AAYAM SOCIETY

Bhanu Bharti is one of the most eminent Indian theatre directors, who graduated from NSD in 1973,   bagging the Best All Round student and the Best Director’s award. He has also been honoured with many prestigious National Awards for his exclusive contribution to the field of       theatre.  

           

Bhanu Bharti headed the Drama Department of Rajasthan University, Jaipur, from its inception in           1976    till 1978. He has also taught dramatic literature, scenic design and acting in many institutions, including the NSD. He has served as the Director of the Shri Ram Centre for Art and Culture, Delhi,       and headed Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandal, Udaipur , Rajasthan . He was also the          Chairman of Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Akademi.

10        Shalini Sethi, Media & Communication Consultant to World Bank

Shalini Sethi is currently working as a Communication and Media Consultant on a World Bank Project. She started her career with Good Relations India Ltd, the first Independent PR Consultancy in   the country. She worked with Good Relations for 10 years where she rose from a Trainee to a Senior           Account Director. Then she ventured into being an Entrepreneur and started her own PR, Vision Pvt.         Ltd. Thereafter, she worked as the Head of Corporate Communication with Jindal Steel and is currently            engaged in Developmental Projects for the World Bank. She also has a vast teaching experience behind    her and is a Guest Faculty to most of the Key Colleges of Mass Communication.

11        Ms. Annapurna Vancheswaran, The Energy Research Institute (TERI)

Annapurna Vancheswaran began her professional career in Communication and Outreach with TERI in             1990. Her prime focus is in the area of developing communication strategies on environment and    development involving international and Indian business organisations, government departments, and           NGOs. 

As the coordinator of the “The Energy Research Institute-Business Council for Social Development      (TERI-BCSD) India - the regional network of the World Business Council for Sustainable       Development, Geneva, she is involved in developing social programmes for the corporate sector and in          providing a platform of debate and discussions for the socially conscious corporate community. She has      been coordinating the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit since its origin in 2001. She is also           involved in the institute’s information dissemination process, which includes involving the media both             national and international.

She is currently pursuing her doctoral programme on Corporate Social Responsibility from the Indian     Institute of Technology, New Delhi, India.

12        Mr. Sanjay Singh, Vice President, Public Affairs – Tata Services Ltd.

Mr. Sanjay Singh graduated from Hindu College, and completed his MBA from XLRI, Jamshedpur.   Delhi.  He joined Tata Steel in 1978 and worked as Executive to Dr. J.J. Irani. In 1989 he was posted as             the Chief Administrator of Tata Main Hospital and worked for two years.  He was also the Deputy            Director (PR) and later promoted as Director (PR) and Chief Corporate Communications in Tata Main         Hospital. As Director (PR) and Chief, Corporate Communications, he was responsible for designing Tata             Steel’s “Communication as a Driver for Change Programme”

In 2002 moved to Delhi as Chief Resident Executive of Tata Steel. In 2004 got appointed as Vice         President in Tata Services.  Now he is looking after Public Affairs on behalf of several Tata Group           Companies.
