YES – (Youth Employment Summit) hosts UN Millennium Campaign against Poverty in Presidency College on 16th Oct 2006 at 10am

We invite you all to participate in a Unique Campaign against Poverty in Presidency College, Chennai at 10 am on 16th Oct 2006.

The "STAND UP" challenge is an initiative of the United Nations Millennium Campaign which seeks to raise awareness about global poverty and the Millennium Development Goals, a set of eight specific goals that commit rich and poor countries to work together to eradicate extreme poverty by 2015. Through this action organizers seek to demonstrate to policy makers the growing global support for the achievement of these Goals and for the strengthening of development policies in both Northern and Southern countries.

The challenge takes place as part of a broader month of anti poverty mobilizations organized by Global Call to Action Against Poverty's (GCAP) and the official results announcement of the Guinness World Record will be on October 17th, the United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP).

In line with the requirements of Guinness World Records the "STAND UP" challenge will take place between 10.00am (GMT) October 15 and end at 10.00am (GMT) October 16. During this time the Millennium Campaign will join forces with a wide range of partners across the world including GCAP, the ONE campaign, trade unions, faith based groups, local governments, youth groups, Parliamentarians, sporting associations, media and other key partners to mobilize thousands of people to take a stand, showing solidarity for ending poverty by 2015.

More than 500 events in over 50 countries are currently registered on www.standagainstpoverty.org to take part in the challenge. From schoolchildren in Kathmandu to churchgoers in Texas, everyone is standing up to remind their governments that the promise to help the billions living in extreme poverty must be kept.
