Why a celebration? We need to celebrate, meet up with peers, family and friends, discuss challenges, share information, build links and solidarity. We are all way too serious most of the time. One percent of a year we should be able to give to fun. While we do have our different programmes during the year, where we often collaborate, the attempt is to build a wider platform for civil society.
This would be an event to bring in the common citizen, and introduce them to human rights and development issues in a 'fun' way. The venue would be a central place in Bangalore. Mobilisation of organisers would be human rights based [so the event itself will be human rights based], and the outreach will be celebration based, [so fun].
The event itself could be modelled on a Village Market--the Halli Jathre--which includes all ages, castes and religions. The mainstay would be songs, theatre, street plays, movies etc... a festival of freedom, a 'fun event'. The atmosphere will be festive. There could be serious business, but in the sidelines, not the major/central event itself. There will be no seminars, conferences or workshops. There will not be any 'statement'. The event itself will demonstrate what we stand for.
Dates The celebration would be from 10a-7p on 25 and 26 November 2006.
Funds *It would be a non-funded event. *Individuals and organisations could raise funds for their events, expenses. *Only the space will be provided. *All other expenses will be borne by the participant-organisers themselves. *There could be some money transactions. We need to discuss this further.
Non-negotiable *Respect for human rights, with the UDHR as the bottom line *Respect for life [meaning no pro-market, neo-liberals or communalists] *No logos [meaning no Coke, Pepsi etc] *No plastics [either for sale or for packing].
Encourage *Products made directly by the community organisations. *Sharing of traditional/indigenous wisdom. *Organic produce. *Handicrafts/traditional products. *Pirate Culture: Adbusters--'fake goods/labels'--would find space.
Online planning *The online forum for discussions will be hrm@yahoogroups.com. There are many who expressed interest but could not come to the meeting. They could contribute by responding to this mail, post suggestions to hrm@yahoogroups.com , or come for any subsequent meeting.
