March 12: Mumbai: Invitation for Programme on World Glaucome Day

Subject: World Glaucoma Day

Main Point: Invitation for Programme on World Glaucome Day on March 12

 Category of Topic: Education

Message: Glaucoma is a chronic, progressive disease of the optic nerve. It is most common cause for irreversible blindness in the world including India. In India, there are at least 12 million people affected with the disease, at least 1.5 million are blind from the disease. It is disheartening to see that more than 90% of people are unaware of the disease when first diagnosed even in urban area of metro city. The disease is more common in old age. As glaucoma usually causes blindness without any symptoms, it is appropriately referred to as the "sneak thief of sight". As longevity is increasing and so the population of India, glaucoma is going to become a major cause of ocular morbidity. In order to increase awareness among common population, World glaucoma Association (WGA) observes 12th March as a world glaucoma day. On this day, Bombay City Eye Institute & Research center (BCEIRC) has organized a free glaucoma camp in morning from 9 AM to 3 PM. In the evening, from 6.30 PM to 8.30 PM at Patkar Hall, Marine Lines, a public awareness lecture has been organized. The focus of this session is to increase the knowledge about Glaucoma and its impact on the lives of the people affected by it. On that day, Dr. Rajul S Parikh (Head, Department of Glaucoma, BCEIRC, associate advisory board member of WGA) and Dr. Kulin Kothari (Medical Director, BCEIRC) will give an overview and basic knowledge about glaucoma. Few glaucoma patients will talk about their own perspective and experiences about the disease.
