August 29: Mumbai: Lecture on 'The Compact and Sustainable City'
Prof Mike Jenks is delivering a lecture on 'The Compact and Sustainable City: Avoiding 'The Day After Tomorrow' at Rachna Sansad Auditorium at 2.30 pm on Aug 29.
Mike Jenks is Professor Emeritus, Department of Architecture at Oxford Brookes University. He is also the Founder Director of the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development (OISD). He was the Principal Investigator leading the City Form: the Sustainable Urban form Consortium, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) with a grant (see www.city-form.org). Most recently he has won a grant of £230,000 from the Higher Education Funding Council to act as an expert Independent Evaluator to assess a large £5 million project Building Sustainable Communities.
The illustrated lecture gives a brief overview of climate change and urbanisation globally. The theory about compact cities developed in Europe is briefly discussed and a question is raised about its relevance in other contexts, especially Asia. Examples of potentially sustainable cities (or urban areas) are presented from Europe and Asia, and a way forward to achieve more sustainable urban forms is proposed. The key argument is that to achieve sustainable development, the form of cities most be planned and designed sustainably, and that to some extent, this is achievable if action is taken now. The lecture is aimed at a more general audience, rather than just academics, specialists or professionals, but it is relevant to all of them.
