Invitation to the Meeting ofPeople Agenda for Hubballi-Dharwad & North Karnataka North Karnataka is craving for development. support for its agriculture, industry, education, health, civic infrastructure, and so on And it deserves equal treatment. It no ordinary land. Rich history, culture, mine reserves, forests, large rivers, whose potential is yet to be fully tapped, productive land, gentle and skillful people, who are dotting the entire globe today it has it all that takes for the making of a progressive and prosperous civilization.
Yet North Karnataka is languishing. Thousands of educated youth, engineers, skilled and unskilled workers, labourers from drought-stricken villages are today forced to migrate to Bangalore in search of livelihood. And what happening to Bangalore? It is bursting out, crumbling under the burden of intra-state and inter-state migration. Industry is shying away from Karnataka for lack of facilities to grow beyond Bangalore in other parts of Karnataka. This is very much avoidable if the state is developed uniformly. All parts of the state deserve equal opportunity for development. Neither the capital nor its adjacent regions should be preferred over the remaining parts of the state. Its high time that the all the regions of the state, more so North Karnataka, are done justice.
Uneven development of Karnataka is a not a new issue. While Bangalore and some surrounding towns continue to grow, several parts of the state are languishing in backwardness. Karnataka is not Bangalore. Negligence of North Karnataka in the development matters is well known and discussed. More than 60 years after independence, decades after the unification of Karnataka and after 20 years of economic liberalisation, North Karnataka is yet to realize the dream industrial development and better quality of life. Elections come and go, leaders get elected for record 8-9 times, governments take over and fall, and years pass by, but the development of North Karnataka is always elusive. All that comes its way from time to time is lip-service and far spaced assurances.Even the Karnataka Human Development Report (2005), brought out by the Karnataka government itself and the Dr. Nanjundappa Committee Report (2002) note the gross imbalances in development of the state.
It is in this backdrop that a platform of People of North Karnataka is being formed. A meeting is organised to discuss and adopt the People Agenda for Hubballi-Dharwad & North Karnataka. This platform would be cultivated as a unified voice of people of Hubballi-Dharwad & North Karnataka.
