June 08: Mumbai: Citizens' Meet to Protect Versova Mangroves

The S.A.V.E. Forum (Save Andheri Versova Environment Forum) has been very
active in taking up issues for 'greater common good'.  One such current
matter concerns the 'mangroves' which are being persistantly destroyed by
rascals while the various authorities are in a state of denial and
inability.  In view of this, the Forum has decided to act on its own and
involve all 'activists' and citizens to highlight the serious issue which
could lead to a man made disaster.

You are requested to participate in this citizen's movement and persuade
your family, friends, colleagues to join you for this good work.
Let us remember: complete, accurate and persistant action always works, the
system works, can be made to work.

*Protect Versova Mangroves*

Dear Friends,

In March 2002, SAVE Forum filed a PIL in Bombay High Court to protect and
rejuvenate

the mangroves of S. No 161, Versova. With our persuasion for the last 6
years, support

from the media, and enthusiasm of the residents we have been able to
convince
the

concerned authorities that the best way to protect and rejuvenate  the
mangroves of

Versova is by putting up a CHAIN-LINK FENCE along the High Tide Line ( HTL)
and

create a uniform bio-shield with suitable plantation/ trees, planted along
the HTL as per

the directives of the Ministry of Environment & Forest, New Delhi.

In response

Urban Development Dept. Govt of Maharashtra vide their GR dated
29-07-2004 sanctioned Rs 7.40 crores for the above project.

On 21-03-2005 a sum of Rs 1.28 crores was transferred to MCGM to
start the work on the project with a promise to release the rest of the
amount.

But till date, inspite of our various reminders no work has started
on the site and only lame excuses given highlighting the authorities
indifference, disinterest and/or pointing to some hidden agenda.
