Tiss teaches human rights..........Farah H Chitalwala

Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Tiss) in association with the Centre for Enquiry into Health and Allied Themes (Cehat) will conduct a course on health and human rights from January 28 to February 8, 2009.

Students will study rights violations related to health issues. "In hospitals when a patient is denied primary healthcare his human rights are being violated," said Lakshmi Lingam, dean (research and development) of Tiss.

Breach of confidentiality about the patients' disease, performance of medical procedures without informed consent, unethical medical practices are other instances of human rights violations. The course aims to sensitise unaware medical professionals to these issues," said, Lingam.

"Issues relating to abortion, eviction, displacement, torture in prisons, communal violence are all human right issues which have health-related consequences," said Padma Deosthali.

The course will also provide information about action groups that students can approach and preventive measures against violations. Subjects will include universal healthcare access, torture and human rights, children and their rights violation etc.

The course is targeted towards doctors, nurses, advocates, social workers, and students.
