Masterclass for Directors Directors set the strategic direction for their organizations. They are experienced analytical decision makers. Directors need to look outwards, beyond the company, seeing the business in its competition, commercial contacts. In strategy formation the board looks ahead in time and externally in direction, seeing the firm in its strategic environment. Then strategies need to be translated into policies that can guide top management. At the same time the board needs to monitor and supervise the activities of executive management looking inwards as the current management situation and recent performance. Finally, accountability involves looking outwards and reflecting corporate activities and performance to all stakeholders. We feel that the subject of governance, which involves issues of transparency, accountability, equity, integrity and social and environmental responsibility and drives 21st Century business and government agenda, has not been paid the attention it deserves. We believe that the most effective way to bring about long-term change is through powerful learning experiences. Genuine learning takes preparation and self-awareness; participation rather than just listening; and embedding new habits and techniques through real-life application. We recognize that everyone has potential; if people are effectively directed, engaged, respected and deployed according to their strengths, then breakthrough performance is achievable in any organization. Directorship is no longer a sinecure, yet few directors get trained for their role. Recent boardroom reforms introduced in most countries have put the onus of responsibility on directors. Directors are facing prison sentences for failing to discharge their fiduciary roles our programmers are designed to have real impact on participants and their organizations.
